Park Prewett hospital near Baisingstoke was built in 1912 by architect GT Hine a prominent architect who designed numerous British asylums and hospitals. Park Prewett is at present one of the best preserved examples of his designs.
Park Prewett came into being as a result of overcrowding at Knowle hospital, The first Hampshire county asylum. At its peak Park Prewett provided care for 1200 patients. In the later years many of the buildings have started to suffer from structural problems most notably a huge crack in the water tower.
The hospital finally closed in 1997 when the patients were transferred to new buildings. In may 2004 plans were put forward proposing to demolish the buildings in order to make way for new houses. demolition is scheduled to start in 2006.
