Work began on Penallta Colliery in 1901 and by 1909 was in full production, In 1939 Penalta held the record for the most coal produced in a single week.
In 1986 there was a major fire which caused the closure of a coal face.The colliery survived until 1991, when political pressure forced its final closure.
The site is fairly small, comprising of the Headstocks and winding house and a number of outbuildings, In the future the buildings may be converted to homes and offices.
