The Hospital Today mostly stands empty. It is In the process of being fully shut down. However there is still some on site hospital activity so security is still tight. this includes well maintained fences and notices claiming the use of CCTV.
Due to good security on site this grade II listed hospital has survived in remarkably good condition. There is no visible arson and little vandalism here.
Graylingwell hospital first opened its doors in Chichester in 1897 To house the pauper lunatics of West Sussex. Since then various additions and extensions have been made. most notably the wards build in the 30's to deal with a need to increase capacity on the site.
During The First world war the Buildings were converted for use as a military hospital to treat the many wounded men returning form France. At the end of the war the site was returned to public use and remained so until 2002 when the site begun to be shutdown.
