Penallta Colliery

Visited 2005

Work began on Penallta Colliery in 1901 and by 1909 was in full production, In 1939 Penalta held the record for the most coal produced in a single week.

In 1986 there was a major fire which caused the closure of a coal face. The colliery survived until 1991, when political pressure forced its final closure. A number of building survive, inculding the Headstocks, bathouse and winding house as well as number of small workshops. In the future the buildings may be converted to homes and offices.
